A pavement sign is often the first thing a customer reads about your business, before they see your window or your name above the door. The right one is easy to read from the direction people walk, stays upright in the wind, and is quick to bring in at closing time.

Types of pavement sign

Water-base flexi signs have a single panel slotted into a heavy recycled base. The panel bends in a gust and springs back, which makes them the most stable choice on exposed corners. They come compact, standard and large, plus a tall totem for sheltered entrances.

Swing signs hang the display between two posts so it swings with the wind. They are double-sided, which suits pavements where people walk in both directions, and take either a printed aluminium panel or a poster pocket you can refresh weekly.

Poster A-boards use front-opening snap frames or magnetic covers. You change the poster in seconds without moving the board, so they suit estate agents, cinemas and shops with monthly promotions.

Steel, printed and plastic A-boards are the traditional folding board: steel frames with chalkboard, aluminium composite or foam PVC panels, a classic white steel board, a budget plastic board for sheltered spots, and water-fill plastic boards and pyramids.

How to choose

• Wind: flexi and swing signs cope best. Tall rigid boards and totems need shelter.
• Message: a printed panel for a permanent brand, a poster frame for changing offers, a chalkboard for daily specials.
• Size: measure the clear pavement. A compact sign suits a narrow footway; a large panel reads from across the road.
• Storage: most fold flat or lift off their base; water-filled bases are heavy when full, and the larger ones have wheels.
• Double or single sided: swing signs and A-boards show both ways; flexi signs have one panel.

Sizes at a glance

Flexi panels run from 410 x 763 mm to 540 x 917 mm. Swing sign panels run from 430 x 625 mm (A3 poster) to 674 x 997 mm (A1 poster). Poster A-boards take A2, 20 x 30 in, A1 or A0 posters. Steel A-board panels are 500 x 700 mm, 563 x 813 mm or 730 x 1049 mm.

Pavement permission

A sign on the public highway needs the highway authority's agreement. Some councils license A-boards, some allow one per business within set rules, and some ban them on busy streets. Keep the sign close to your frontage, leave the clear width your council asks for, and take it in at night. Rules differ between councils and between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, so check with your local council before you put anything on a public pavement.
